400 million, and counting

Firefox has now been downloaded more than 400 million times. That’s quite a feat for the upstart challenger to Microsoft domination.

Spread Firefox chronicles the amazing growth since the count started in 2004. Of course, it’s impossible to determine from these figures how many people are actually using Firefox. But let’s just say it definitely shows a trend.

  1. We have some other methods for tracking trial, adoption, and retention, but those are harder for our grassroots marketing community to impact and they’re a little less concrete since they fluctuate a lot.

Right now we see about 120 million regular Firefox users in any given month. We can measure this directly based on security updates.

Independent web stats companies are measuring Firefox’s global marketshare between 15% and 25% depending on the source. Now, that’s measuring usage, not users, so for Firefox users who probably use their browsers a bit more than IE users, it’s probably reasonable to estimate our users (not usage) at the low end of that usage spectrum.

If so, and given a world-wide web population of about 800 million people, and if we guess we have 15% of the users, that would come out to about 120 million Firefox users — a figure that matches quite well with what we see around our security updates.
