AbiWord

This alternative word processor has many of the features, but less of the bloat, found in Microsoft Word. It can read and write industry standard document types, and is able to put together quite a spiffy layout.

  1. I’ve been using Linux alongside OS X for a couple years now and so I was excited when Abiword came out for OS X because I’ve been using and loving it on Linux the whole time.

Well, I got the OS X version downloaded and gave it a spin and it turned out to be horribly buggy.

If anyone reading this downloads Abiword for OS X and comes to the same conclusion that I did, don’t discount it just yet. Once those bugs get worked out, the OS X version will be just as amazingly lightning-quick as the Linux version is.

  2. Like Chris says, Abiword for OSX is beyond buggy. They ought to scrap this version from the internet as it’s completely unsuable even as a basic writing and editing program.

Great features I’m sure but this version ain’t right.

  3. I had the same experience as Chris and Susie when I tried AbiWord. It didn’t last long on my hard drive! If it’s free you’re looking for, either go with Bean or OpenOffice — the former is lightweight and should suffice for most “word” documents.
