Adium

I’m not much of a chatter, but if I did chat I’d use iChat. If that didn’t work, Adium seems like the next best choice — given the high praise it has received. A lot of people also like Mercury Messenger. Or if you prefer IRC, there is Colloquy. Or you can get an open source clone of MSN called aMSN. And now Proteus is free — no registration required.

  1. Mercury Messenger is MUCH better and even allows Webcam from Mac to PC and back. Last I heard, it was the ONLY one to do so.

  2. Looks like something I should add to the list.

  3. The description and also-try list doesn’t fully explain the abilities of these programs. iChat only works with AIM and .Mac, aMSN and Mercury Messenger are only for MSN Messenger, and Colloquy is only for IRC. Adium supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber/GTalk, Facebook, Myspace, and all sorts of other systems that nobody has ever heard of. This should probably be clarified.

Also, the Proteus link is bad – it should point to proteusx.org.

  4. Thanks for the clarification. Of course, one of the great things about Adium is that it works with just about any protocol you can think of. The Proteus link is fixed.
