An update on freeware newsreaders

It was embarrassingly overdue, but we’ve updated thriftmac’s offering of freeware newsreaders. NetNewsWire is still there, of course, and we’ve retained the open source Vienna and the java-based RSSOwl.

Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, along with Freshly Squeezed Software, has disappeared off the face of the Earth. Strangely enough, attempts to find the site redirect you to “green” news about Chicago — which itself has been discontinued.

NewsMac, meanwhile, has morphed into NewsLife, and will cost you 10 euros.

All is not lost, though: In order to maintain some options, we’ve added Shrook to the list. The interface hurts my eyes, but the developer claims to have features not available in other Mac newsreaders. Decide for yourself.

But, you may be asking, what about NewsFire? It is indeed freeware, but the developer seems to have abandoned support and insists on spamming users with a blog feed that can’t be deleted. You can read about it at MacUpdate. Not nice.

Is there anything we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Actually, I hate to break it to you, but less than a day after this post NewsFire was updated. You might want to go check it out.

  2. Nice to see the update. I still don’t like the idea of not being able to delete the developer’s blog from the feeds. Seems kinda cheesy.

its a google reader beta desktop reader thing running on adobe air. its quite buggy, but it looks promising. I like having google reader as a backup and as a manager for my feeds, but I really want a solid desktop rss reader which uses the google rss.

  4. Judging from the screenshot, it looks a lot like NetNewsWire.
