Be a Guitar Hero for free
We’ve written about this one before, but Frets on Fire popped up in the suggestion box so it’s worth another mention. If you’ve got a copy of Guitar Hero, you likely won’t want to replace it with this open source version. But if you’ve wondered what the hype is about and can’t afford it, Frets on Fire is a good way to try it out for free. That said, the game has a lot of fans and documentation, so you may never want to move on to Guitar Hero.
What’s it like? Imagine a constantly changing 3D diagram showing where to place your fingers on guitar frets (actually, keys on your keyboard) in order to follow along with a song. You have to be nimble with your fingers or you’ll produce some awful squawks. Check out this YouTube video to get a better idea. There is, of course, lots of info at the Frets on Fire website, and it even has its own entry at Wikipedia.
