And the Mac Freeware Idol is . . .
Quinn.
Voting has levelled off and Quinn has maintained its commanding lead. So we’ve closed off voting and have declared Quinn to be the idol.
As mentioned previously, I was surprised Quicksilver and Adium didn’t get more support. They wound up tying for a distant second. I was also surprised to see a game get so much backing — although when you think about it, the TV Idol shows are all about entertainment. If we ever have another Mac Freeware Idol contest, it might make more sense to limit it to games.
Thank you to all those who nominated programs or took part in voting. We hope this little project was a fun mid-summer diversion for you.
The final Idol results are here.
You may be wondering what’s next. How would you feel about Mac Freeware Survivor? Stay tuned.

Quinn takes a big lead
As expected, Quicksilver and Adium are getting a lot of votes in the Mac Freeware Idol survey. But the big surprise (to me, at least) is that Quinn has more than twice as many votes as either of them.
You can see the results so far over here.
If you haven’t voted yet, please do. If you have voted, remember that it’s not nice to vote more than once.

Looks like we need a vote
We’ve got over 20 contenders for Mac Freeware Idol, but no consensus other than the three mentions for Adium.
So we’re going to a vote. Just take the link to the Idol survey and vote for the one you like best. Please be nice and only vote once.

How about Cyberduck?
The one freeware app I use on an almost daily basis is Cyberduck. Anyone feel it’s worthy of Idol status?

Another Idol nomination
We’ve received another nomination for the title of Mac Freeware Idol: Seashore.
Our nominator adds: “Now, to get the people at Pixen, Seashore and Goldberg to talk to each other and make the perfect Photoshop replacement . . .”
I’m sure a lot of people share that wish.

Give us your Idol nominations
We’ve received some good nominations for Mac Freeware Idol, but we need more to choose from. Is there a freeware app that stands head and shoulders above the rest? Take a few seconds to let us know with a comment or an e-mail (mwrogers at shaw dot ca).
Once we have a good number of nominations, everyone can start voting.

Mac Freeware Idol — casting call
All around the world, citizens are celebrating new talent with Idol-style shows. So why not do the same — or something similar — with Mac freeware?
We’re starting off with a casting call. Send a list of Mac freeware apps you feel deserve to be considered for the title of Mac Freeware Idol. We’ll sort through your entries and find 20 or so that have the most buzz.
We’ll post the results, and you can vote on which should stay and which should go. Over the next few weeks, we’ll gradually narrow it down to an ultimate winner.
We won’t be using any fancy polling system — those are vulnerable to ballot-stuffing, and the results don’t really mean much.
So use the Contact or Suggestions forms, the comments below this article or plain old e-mail (mwrogers at shaw dot ca) to give us that initial group of contenders. There’s no deadline, because we want to make sure we have a good number to choose from before moving on to the next step. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to get those submissions in early.
You can send a list of one, five, 10 or however many Mac freeware apps you want.
