Devon's motherlode of freeware

Macworld’s website is in the midst of a series highlighting what they consider to be the best of their Gems — apps you don’t hear much about but which are nonetheless quite useful.

Among them is the freeware EasyFind, which does live searches of your hard drive without indexing. If you haven’t upgraded to Tiger, or if you have and don’t like Spotlight, EasyFind can be a great replacement.

But if you head over to the Devon Technologies website, which is home to EasyFind, you’ll discover quite the stash of free apps and services.

• ThumbsUp creates thumbnail versions of pictures with support for several formats.

• XMenu creates a version of the classic Apple menu, complete with application launcher and access to preferred files and folders.

• Service programs include AntiWordService, BlueService, CalcService, HotService, PDF2RTFService and WordService. Each adds extra functions to cocoa-based programs.

The most extensive of these is WordService, which adds 34 functions by itself. For example, it will convert, format or speak the currently selected text, insert data or show statistics.

Devon calls its freeware section Needful Things. You might find something you never knew you needed.
