Firefox going places

One of the most anticipated features of the upcoming Firefox 3 is known as Places. As described by Macworld, it’s a whole new way of combining and keeping bookmarks and history. The Mozilla wiki has screenshots.

As I looked through the details, though, I was struck by how much they resemble what is already available with Camino. For example, Places will use a database for searches. Tagging will make searches even easier. But Camino already has a search field. And you can “tag” your bookmarks by using the description area available for each of them.

Also in Camino, you can assign shortcuts to bookmarks. This allows you to, for example, type “am” (or whatever else you decide is the shortcut) in the URL field for amazon.com instead of the whole address. I didn’t see anything like this for Places.

Places, on the other hand, does give you a thumbnail of each site. But I’m wondering how useful that really is, and whether it will slow the browser down by taking up a lot of memory.
