Flip, meet iMovie
There seems to be some confusion about whether footage from the Flip camcorder will work with iMovie. I had read somewhere that the Flip recorded in AVI and that this would have to be converted to MPEG4. But on the other hand, when I tried importing clips with iMovie, everything seemed to work fine. So what’s going on?
Thanks to a link from Daring Fireball, I discovered that recent updates to iMovie and QuickTime make it possible for the Flip and iMovie to play nicely together, as outlined in this support article from Apple. (It refers only to the Flip Mino, but the instructions also apply to the Ultra.)
This is good news for Mac users eager to try out the point-and-shoot abilities of the Flip. Using a camcorder was never so simple. And of course iMovie provides a super simple way to assemble your clips into a movie masterpiece.
My only disappointment so far is that quality of the video suffers noticeably when played back in full screen mode. Your Flip movies may be better suited for YouTube than for your TV.
By the way, it’s darned difficult to get hold of the Flip outside the United States, even by mail order. As of this writing, the only thing available in Canada is the Ultra model, sold at Wal-Mart.
