Freeware menubar faves
SurfBits has created a fantastic four list of menubar apps — all of them freeware, of course.
There is no doubt menubar items can be handy, but I try to keep them to a minimum so they don’t get lost among the clutter. Currently, I’m using Jumpcut for clippings, wClock for a proper date, Time Machine because it’s cool to watch it turning back the hands of time, the Canadian flag for access to the Character Palette, the time, and AppleScript for access to the Apple ColorPicker. It goes without saying that Spotlight is up there.
By the way, you can find what is perhaps the ultimate collection of menubar items at Jeweled Platypus, complete with icons.
