GIMP

Have you ever wished there were a free version of Photoshop? Well, there is — kind of. It’s called the GIMP, but it comes with a couple of provisos: You must have X11 installed on your Mac and you must be prepared for a steep learning curve. The GIMP is not exactly Photoshop, but it you may find it comes close enough.

  2. Not sure why GIMP is getting so many thumbs down here – it’s a very powerful program, and you really can’t argue with the price. X11 seems to turn many people off, which is something else I’ve never understood. If you want the capabilities of Photoshop but don’t want to (or can’t) fork over the big bucks, give the GIMP a try. Need some help? Then check out this set of help pages. A big thumbs up from me!

  3. Been using The Gimp for many years coming from Linux. I also use Photoshop, but prefer digital painting in Gimp – at least since Painter got bought out by Corel. Gimp can do everything Photoshop can do, I’ve done a lot of art in Gimp, and for free. You may have to manually create some effects as Gimp doesn’t have billions of really awesome plug-ins, but that’s the only real weakness. Seems some people need to spend money and use tools labeled “industry standard” to feel they are getting value from the software – whatever…
