GIMP

Have you ever wished there were a free version of Photoshop? Well, there is — kind of. It’s called the GIMP, but it comes with a couple of provisos: You must have X11 installed on your Mac and you must be prepared for a steep learning curve. The GIMP is not exactly Photoshop, but it you may find it comes close enough.

  2. Not sure why GIMP is getting so many thumbs down here – it’s a very powerful program, and you really can’t argue with the price. X11 seems to turn many people off, which is something else I’ve never understood. If you want the capabilities of Photoshop but don’t want to (or can’t) fork over the big bucks, give the GIMP a try.
