Help for your language courses

When it comes to learning languages, the best thing you can do is converse with native speakers at every opportunity. You still need a foundation for speaking, though, and a strong vocabulary is a good start.

Vocab helps you do this by providing a way to list words you’ve learned along with their meanings and parts of speech (nouns, verbs and so forth). You can then test yourself by hiding the meanings and plot the results with percentages or on a graph. Augment your testing with an accompanying widget, which throws out a random word for you to practise. Once you have a good grasp of the words you can try them out in conversation.

Vocab supports all European languages, including Greek and Latin. There are built-in palettes for the special characters in French, Spanish, Italian and German. A help file gives tips for creating the breathing marks and iota subscript used in Greek.

Of course, there is much more to learning a language than this one simple program can provide. But if you think of it as one more tool in your toolkit, it can be quite useful.
