How to create a unique blog for free on your Mac

There are plenty of free blogging platforms to choose from, and they generally have a nice selection of templates. But what if you want a blog that suits your individual style—something that doesn’t look like 900 other blogs?

With a little bit of knowledge and collection of freeware, it’s easy to get started on building a blog design you can call your own.

The best way is to tap in the code yourself with a text editor. Forget the WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) stuff. It’s actually harder to learn and the results are seldom exactly what you want.

By using a text editor, you’ll have total control. The only code that shows up is the stuff you put there. That means you get a website that looks just the way you want it to.

There are a number of free text editors to choose from for the Mac, but if you’re a beginner, start with Taco HTML Editor. It helps you along by providing hints for the code you need. You’ll learn fast, but if you yearn to go deeper, try the tutorials at htmldog.com.

You’ll also want some graphics for your website. Simple programs like ImageWell, Seashore and PixelNHance do a great job of producing pictures for the web. Start off with ImageWell to fulfil your basic needs. If you find you decide you need something more powerful, try Seashore for graphics and PixelNHance for photographs. (You can also try here for PixelNHance, which has unfortunately been discontinued.)

Once you’ve got your website ready for public viewing, you may need to upload it to a server. There are no ifs, ands or buts this time. Use the Cyberduck FTP client. You’ll never look back.

Good luck and let us know if you have success—especially if you found this article via ProBlogger.
