Introducing Elmedia Player — and a giveaway

SWF & FLV Player for Mac was already a good option for playing Flash movies, but Eltima Software has cranked it up a notch and transformed it into Elmedia Player.

The free version has a slick all-in-one interface that supports the playback of Flash and other video formats such as Real video, Silverlight, AVI, MOV, MP4 and WMV. It really is nice to have all this functionality in a player that looks right at home on a Mac. You can also keep your videos organized in an iTunes-style library.

The handiest thing about Elmedia Player is the ability to use it for downloading movies. Just browse to the site you want to download from. This feature is only available in the pro version, which would normally set you back $19.95. But once again Eltima insists on giving stuff away.

Leave a comment below describing what you like about Elmedia Player — or a suggestion on how it could be improved — and we’ll send you a pro licence. Just be sure to fill in your email address so we can get hold of you. It will be kept private.

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who took part in the giveaway. We’ll pick the best comments and send out licences. Comments are now closed.

  1. The look and feel of the program is fantastic. I especially like the browser integration feature for quick, seamless access to Elmedia when you need it.

  2. I loved the SWF & FLV player, and used it for a number of years.

The new Elmedia player has some great new functionality, but there is one drawback for me: I wish there was a way to hide the directories and other information (perhaps using a drawer?) when watching a video. While having access to the directories is useful, it can also be highly distracting when all I want to do is simply watch a video.

  3. As someone who has to be offline for a couple of weeks at a time it’s greta to have the option of saving videos to watch whenever I want.

  5. I love that finally there is a player that is able to playback all these formats while still looking good on a Mac!

  6. Great product. I finally have a place to organize and view my .flv files. I wish it did a better job of letting me see my .mp4 files that I make using iSquint for my iPod touch. I just can seem to find a way to play those files on the computer as well as on the touch.

  7. New to mac, tried to view movies and had a lot of trouble.
ELMEDIA PLAYER IS EASY TO USE,
    LOOKS GOOD
Can’t wait to play with it a bit more

  8. Nice, simple interface. Very intuitive. A very handy alternative media player.

  9. What I love the most about Elmedia is the integration of things both old and new – Silverlight on the new end and Real Video reaching back. I appreciate the fact that it looks like a Mac app. So many media players try to look like something different – as if they’re trying to be attractive to non-Mac users. Browser integration is terrific too!

  10. The greatest feature is the ITunes style user interface.
Easy user control over where incomplete and complete files are stored on disk is a very important feature which should be dead easy to use

  11. I was pleasantly surprised when my SWF & FLV Player Pro was updated with Elmedia Player, only thing is it no longer was a Pro version.

    GOOD!

  14. love the look and feel – however right after it was installed – i had an error pop up. I am assuming it is from Elmedia’s installation. “System extension cannot be used – The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.Kext” was install improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.”

Not sure if this is a plugin from this installation of Elmedia or a conflict with an HP plugin. But it happened both times I installed Elmedia.

Love the looks and feel of Elmedia and will be definitely be using it.

    Keep up the good work!

  15. Sounds like a great little program. I’ll be giving it a try.

  16. I think it’d be a good idea to incorporate a burning facility, to enable you to put your compilations onto DVD.

  17. The ability to access iTunes sound enhancing plug-ins, like SRS iWOW and Bongiovi DSP is necessary to make this a viable alternative to itunes for watching movies for me.

  18. Love, love, love! Really great, easy-to-use interface with a pleasing design.
