Introducing Mac Freeware Survivor

Here at thriftmac, we pride ourselves on only having the cream of the crop in our collection of Mac freeware. But no matter how carefully you tend a garden, a few weeds are bound to show up.

That’s why we’re introducing Mac Freeware Survivor, a chance for thriftmac readers to pick the apps they feel deserve to be voted off the island.

I’ve gone through the collection myself, but to be honest there are precious few I want to give the boot. They all seem like old friends. To get started, though, here are three candidates:

OneButton FTP: This open source project started off with a lot of promise, but development appears to be stalled. And connection to the website is sporadic. Meanwhile, Cyberduck continues to be refined as a top-notch FTP client. Is it time to push the eject button for OneButton?

uEdit: It’s still a pretty good text editor, but it hasn’t been updated in ages. In fact, it won’t work at all with Tiger. Should we move on, and edit out uEdit?

wClock: This one has been missing in action for a long time now, and meanwhile has been equalled and surpassed, some might argue, by MagiCal. But believe it or not, I’ve still got it running on my Mac, so I have a soft spot for it. (Perhaps it could be made a download from thriftmac.) Should we finally admit that wClock’s time has ended?

Those are three, but there may be more. Use the comment form if you would like to add a candidate.

  1. Boot all three of them. They all belong alongside other relics of ancient Egypt… past history that serve no use today other than to tell us where we’ve been.
