Know where you are
Pascal Harris at 45RPM Software dropped a line to let us know he’s working hard on a freeware prefpane called Locamatic, which lets your Mac know automatically which network (wired or wireless) it’s on. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s not the most flexible of tools — unlike MarcoPolo, for example, it doesn’t change locations based on whether a monitor is plugged in or whether Bluetooth is being used. That’s because it was designed to be simple to use and to do what most people want — i.e. change location based on the current network (whether wireless or wired). It’s a preference pane rather than an application — so all you do is load it, set it and then forget about it.
Thriftmac headquarters resides in an iMac that is pretty much nailed down to one spot, so we haven’t been able to test Locamatic. For that reason we’re going to try something a little different. Download it, try it, and tell us what you think — via the comments or the contact form. We’ll round up your comments and post them.
Locamatic at least seems to have potential. It is well documented, and Pascal assures us he is committed to adding features based on users’ suggestions. So this may be your opportunity to have an app honed just the way you like it. And if you don’t feel like downloading, it can apparently be found on the current Macworld UK cover CD.
