Netscape R.I.P.
AOL has announced that it will no longer support the Netscape web browser after Feb. 1. That means no further development and essentially consigns the browser to the dustbin of history.
The Netscape Blog recommends switching to Firefox and, if you’re nostalgic, using add-ons to make it seem more like Netscape.
I can remember when Netscape was pretty much synonymous with web browsing, so it’s sad to see it finally come to an end. On the other hand, there are so many great alternatives now that it doesn’t really make a difference in practical terms.
Strangely, the Netscape brand will live on at netscape.com, which continues as a general use Internet portal.
