Songbird 1.0

The open source competitor to iTunes has hit the big one-point-oh — and we have to say it’s looking good. Here are some first impressions of Songbird:

1. It has a spiffy look that will make any Mac user feel at home.

2. It has a huge number of add-ons that expand its capabilities — much like Firefox.

3. When you play a song, it displays the album cover and information about the artist.

4. It provides access to Shoutcast with its huge variety of streaming music.

5. It imports your iTunes library.

All in all, Songbird is a worthy alternative to iTunes and well worth a look. And by the way, congratulations to all the volunteers who put so much time and effort into this project. You’ve done a great job and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for Songbird.

  1. Unfortunately for those of us using PowerPC systems (G3, G4, G5), Songbird in the 1.0 incarnation requires an Intel Mac ONLY
