SuperTux boldly goes where no penguin has gone before

What better thing to do on a cold winter evening than play SuperTux 0.3.0?

And how the little penguin who grows when he gets an egg has changed. Starting with said egg.

Instead of proclaiming “excellent” when he grows, Tux now gives a joyful “Yahoo” as he increases in size.

When he gets a fireflower, he no longer has a red aura about him. Instead, he wears a red hat, like an old-fashioned firefighter’s helmet.

The background music is jazzier, and Tux has places part way through the levels where he can ring a bell to save to if he gets knocked off. But there’s a catch. Every time Tux starts mid-level, he loses 25 coins.

So collecting as many golden fish-embossed coins as possible takes on new importance.

At the end of the classic SuperTux Icy Island levels, our penguin friend meets a new enemy in an abominable snowman.

After he defeats Yeti, he’s on to a whole new world.

Forest World.

It looks different, it moves different (four directions) and there are new foes and challenges to conquer.

Tux of the forest faces trees, leaf clusters, snails and weird-looking little birds with dragon tails who swoop down at him. There are wind vents to turn on, secret places that are hard to find, flying bathtubs for transport (let’s be realistic here, penguins can’t fly) and even flowers that are deadly to the touch.

Tux becomes more of an explorer, able to climb trees, carry around blocks and even delve underground.

While the controls were changed with the revamp and it took some revising under options to get them sorted out, there’s little else to complain about with the updated SuperTux. The screen moving up and down along with Tux is another throw-off at first, but since the game is as addictive as the original, it doesn’t take long to adapt.

Overall, four ice cubes out of five.
