SWF & FLV Player giveaway

SWF & FLV Player iconSteve Jobs may be ready to dance on Flash’s grave, but there are still plenty of Mac users who enjoy movies in SWF and FLV formats. If you’re one of them, SWF & FLV Player is a solid choice.

In addition to plain old viewing, this program allows you to fast-forward and rewind frame by frame, manage playlists, zoom in and out, and browse websites for Flash movies. These are all great advantages over simply clicking and watching.

And that’s just the free version. If you upgrade to Pro, you can download the video to your hard drive, get the external resources for SWF files, view movies in full-screen mode, and convert Flash movies into a series of images. Then you can really dissect a movie.

Normally an upgrade to Pro costs $19.95, but Eltima Software is offering free licences to thriftmac readers. To get one, I would like you to help flesh out this review with some real-life examples of how SWF & FLV Player can be used.

Download the free version, check it out, and leave a comment. Don’t be afraid of being critical — Eltima wants to know what you really think. We’ll give free licences for the Pro version to the three commenters we feel did a good job of describing how they use SWF & FLV Player.

If you would like a licence, be sure to leave your email address — it won’t be published, but we’ll have it on file so we can send the licence.

  3. Seems pretty good, much better than Safari or Flash7 for viewing flash and not a hack like Perian (which is nice on its own), but it’s a nice native flash viewer, I really would enjoy the pro version that has a ton of features I’d love, makes it a lot easier than searching through source, etc. The zoom and frame by frame are kind of cool, have yet to find a use for them, but I’m sure I will.
Generally it’s a lot smoother than anything adobe has thrown, and is nice since it’s native mac, and isn’t a clumsy win port.

  4. Seems good.

I like that CPU usage stayed around 35%.

I also like being able to log in to password protected sites. Very handy.

I would like to see a conversion capabilities built-in. It would be nice to be able to convert a Flash movie to something native on my Mac or iPod Touch.

  5. Pretty nice program. Plays well on my mac, with little to no frame drops. The ability to directly download swf files directly from websites is an amazing feature.

One thing that is annoying about the program though, is the fact that the movie controls by default stay on the screen, even when no video is playing. I know this can be solved by going to window>hide video controls, but I believe it should auto-hide by default.
