The weird tabs are gone

The final version of Safari 4 is out, and the controversial tabs across the top that showed up in the beta are gone. Can’t say I’ll miss them. In their place are tabs similar to those in version 3, but with nice shading that makes it easier to distinguish one from another. Thank heavens sanity prevailed.

The progress bar in the address space is also back — sort of. There is now an indicator at the far end with a dark background that says “Loading.” At a certain point, the background turns clear. The jury’s still out on this one. In limited testing, it seems the background goes clear after a few seconds regardless of how much of the page has loaded.

  1. I was very happy to see tab sanity restored. I used the beta for weeks and never got used to the high and wides.

  2. The new placement of tabs in the Beta was one of my favourite things! Possibly because I need/want every pixel on my 13” MacBook. I’m sad to see them go, am hoping a hidden pref can bring them back. I already tried the Beta hidden pref, but that does not work :(

  3. I would personally prefer to have the new style tabs from the beta back… they saved a lot of screen real estate and on a small laptop, I could use all the real estate I can get.

  4. Gees, people. It really isn’t all that difficult to deal with the tabs on top.

One of the things that is good to see is someone trying something different. It saved space and was just as easy to use.

And this is from someone who jumps back and forth between Firefox and Safari interchangeably, and didn’t find the placement a problem or at all difficult.

It’s no wonder so many good ideas never get integrated into products never get a fair acceptance.

The only negative with them was related to the active tab not being different enough to the inactive tabs.

Otherwise it was a brilliant idea.

  5. Tabs on top was Google Chrome innovation, wasn’t it? So just hang tight and wait for Google Chrome for Mac. And wait and wait…

  6. what i do not like in the new tabs is the little shut down button that appears when you hover over it. i want to go straight to the button to close a tab and not just guess the position. any way of changing this would be appreciated.

  7. I have to admit I find this irritating as well.
