Three good points for Windows

We’d like to welcome a new affiliate advertiser to thriftmac — Parallels. This highly praised virtualization software allows you to run Windows on your Mac. Why would you want to do such a thing? Here are three good reasons:

1. An increasing number of games are now available for the Mac, but the mountain of games for Windows may never be matched — especially when it comes to graphics-intensive 3D games. Parallels now supports Windows 3D graphics gaming.

2. People are switching to the Mac in droves, but they may find that there are Window applications they don’t want to leave behind. There may not be an exact Mac equivalent, or if there is it might be too pricey for now. Parallels eases the transition.

3. Web designers, living in a world where Windows dominates, will always have to test their designs to ensure they work on all platforms. Parallels allows you to run Internet Explorer for testing while coding in a Mac environment.

If you’re still not convinced, you might want to read this article at MacNewsWorld: Windows on Mac: Worth the Effort?

Macworld gave Parallels 3 much praise in a recent review. And gave it an Eddy award in 2006.

Overall, we feel quite good about having Parallels on board as an advertiser.

  1. I’m the proud owner of a new, loaded Mac Pro. Since I’m also a gamer, I loaded Parallels 3, hopeful that it would meet my Windows needs. It did — sort of. It ran into a serious hanging (and loud buzzing!?) problem and froze the screen repeatedly, though it had worked well for a couple of days. I contacted Parallels customer service, and they responded by asking me to send them a screen shot of the problem. Ever tried to take a screen shot of a FROZEN, buzzing screen…?

I’ve abandoned Parallels (an expensive lesson in futility, at least for me), and have adopted Boot Camp. Free, elegant, simple — and Windows XP Home runs better under Boot Camp then it ever did on any PC I’ve owned. So, my Mac Pro is now dual boot — OSX and WinXP — and everything works beautifully. Except, of course, for Parallels. Oh well…

  2. Yikes! I hope other people have had better experiences.
