Three more suggestions
The suggestion box has been brimming over lately, and we’re trying to catch up. (Not that we’re complaining — keep ’em coming!)
First up is ibrowser. It’s a web browser based on the same rendering engine as Safari, with the ability to fill the screen while hiding the menu bar and dock. It also has a transparency that you can set to blend in with the desktop. A floating panel allows you browse to various websites. The developer refers to it as the “anti-kiosk/kiosk” web browser — probably because it doesn’t completely take over your screen.
Next we have Pingus, an open source clone of the classic game of Lemmings. For the uninitiated, the game involves leading a band of animals (in this case penguins) through increasingly complex landscapes by giving them special powers (such as the ability to dig) at the appropriate time. Pingus is nicely done, and will be appreciated by those nostalgic for the early days of gaming. You might want to turn off the music, though — it tends to get on your nerves.
Last on the list is HUDTunes, a controller for iTunes that takes its name from the transparency-style interface used in the design. It looks good and has many of the controls you would expect. More interesting are some of the features the developer has planned: album art, music search, lyrics display and more iTunes controls.
Of course, this is just one of many freeware apps available that allow you to control iTunes, which makes you wonder why Apple doesn’t create one of its own. You can control iTunes by clicking on its icon in the dock, but the demand for a floating panel of some sort is obviously there.
