GIMP

Have you ever wished there were a free version of Photoshop? Well, there is — kind of. It’s called GIMP, and it does a good job of such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. OK, it’s is not exactly Photoshop, but it you may find it comes close enough. And in case you were worried, GIMP no longer requires that X11 be installed on your Mac.

  2. Not sure why GIMP is getting so many thumbs down here – it’s a very powerful program, and you really can’t argue with the price. X11 seems to turn many people off, which is something else I’ve never understood. If you want the capabilities of Photoshop but don’t want to (or can’t) fork over the big bucks, give the GIMP a try. Need some help? Then check out this set of help pages. A big thumbs up from me!

  3. Been using The Gimp for many years coming from Linux. I also use Photoshop, but prefer digital painting in Gimp – at least since Painter got bought out by Corel. Gimp can do everything Photoshop can do, I’ve done a lot of art in Gimp, and for free. You may have to manually create some effects as Gimp doesn’t have billions of really awesome plug-ins, but that’s the only real weakness. Seems some people need to spend money and use tools labeled “industry standard” to feel they are getting value from the software – whatever…

  4. It might be good to mention the Gimp not needing X11 anymore! It look almost like a real Mac native app today (has some visual quirks, but those do not effect operations: sometimes a terminal window is activated in the background, but not shown).

I am very happy with this version.

You might want to change the given downloadlink (which is obsolete) to the Mac specific Gimp page at Sourceforge

    Thumbs up for Gimp 2.8.4!

  5. I’ve fixed the download link and noted that X11 is not required.

  6. Okay, I didn’t download GIMP from here, but from the GIMP homepage, so I don’t know how this one relates, but honestly, I love it. Definitely isn’t Photoshop exactly, but’s better than screwing around with Preview. I use this to make drawings and edit Minecraft textures (really good for making Minecraft textures) and personally love it. I recommend.

  7. There’s a good program called MyBrushes is excellent to paint on iPad. The whole drawing process could be saved as drawing video. Really wonderful.
